To get the most out of our events, it is vital that you prepare...
Careers events are what you make them - the more you put in, the more you get out. Our top-tips below should help you make the most of our events.
Before the Event
• Find out more about the organisations who will be attending each event via the A-Z exhibitor lists you will find on each events web pages on this site. Be careful not to pre-judge any of them - a telecommunications or engineering firm may have excellent opportunities in marketing, HR, finance or a number of other areas. Don't overlook organisations whose names you don't recognise - they may have just the job for you!
• Think about your strengths and skills. You will only have a short time to sell yourself at each stand and in that time, you will need to impress. A good way to do this is to update your CV prior to attending an event. Although many recruiters will not accept CVs and will require you to complete their own application forms, updating your CV will give you an opportunity to review your skills and experience which you can sell to the employers at events.
• Find out if your University Careers Service will be holding any preparation sessions in the lead up to the event. If they are, book a place and make sure you attend.
On the Day
• Dress smartly! It will show that you mean business and will help you feel more confident.
• When you arrive, you will usually be given a guide which will contain a map of the venue and details of all the exhibitors and their vacancies. Take a few moments to read the guide and if you haven’t already, work out who you want to see.
• Resist the temptation to head straight to your favourite employer. Talk to others first to calm your nerves and practice your technique.
• Often the representatives on stands are recent graduates, so don't be afraid to ask questions informally - they were probably in your position last year. Remember the exhibitor is paying to be there - they want to talk to you. Here are some possible questions you may want to ask.
• After visiting a stand, write down the name of the person you have spoken to and any information they gave you. You may be able to use it in a covering letter or on an application form to show that you are enthusiastic.
• Above all make the most of it! Careers fairs provide you with a unique opportunity to find out about potential opportunities for you, in one day, all in one place.
